Concerned about your pet?

What Are Blood Tests?

A blood test involves taking a small sample of blood, usually from your pet’s neck or leg, to assess internal health.

It can help detect:

  • Infections
  • Anaemia
  • Organ dysfunction
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Underlying conditions that may not yet be visible

It’s a safe, simple procedure performed by our experienced clinical team.

What Types of Blood Tests Do We Offer?

Our vets will advise on the right test for your pet depending on their age, symptoms, and medical history.

We provide a wide range of blood tests tailored to your pet’s needs, including:

Routine wellness screening

Pre-anaesthetic blood checks

Progesterone

Phenobarbitone

Infection and inflammation markers

Senior pet health screening

including specific metabolic disease testing

Organ function panels

(liver, kidney, thyroid, etc.)

Blood glucose levels and day patient glucose curves

(diabetes monitoring)

Pet Blood Analysis – In-House & External Testing

We’re equipped with modern in-house blood analysers, allowing us to run many tests on the same day, often within an hour.

For more complex diagnostics, we also work with trusted external veterinary laboratories, ensuring a thorough and expert analysis when needed.

This gives us the best of both worlds: speed when it matters, and depth when it’s needed.

Why Would My Pet Need a Blood Test?

There are many reasons a vet might recommend a blood test, such as:

  • Ongoing illness or unexplained symptoms
  • Monitoring an existing condition (e.g., diabetes, thyroid disease, seizure medication)
  • Before surgery, to ensure your pet is safe for anaesthesia
  • As part of a routine senior health check
  • Investigating weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea or changes in behaviour

Even when your pet seems well, blood tests can catch early warning signs before problems develop.

The Benefits of Our Team Performing a Pet Blood Test

At The Vet Whitehaven, your pet is in expert hands.

We offer:

  • Gentle, low-stress sample collection
  • Clear explanations of what’s being tested and why
  • Fast turnaround for urgent results
  • Ongoing care based on findings
  • A calm, pet-friendly environment to reduce anxiety

We know every pet is different and we treat them that way.

How to Prepare Your Pet for a Blood Test

Most blood tests require no special preparation, but in some cases your vet may advise:

  • Fasting your pet for 8–12 hours beforehand
  • Taking certain medication prior to your visit (this will be discussed with you on a case by case basis)
  • Keeping them calm before the appointment

We’ll give you clear instructions ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect.

Getting the Results

Many in-house tests are available on the same day, often within an hour.

External lab results typically return within 24–72 hours, depending on the test.

Once the results are in, we’ll explain them clearly and guide you on any next steps, whether it’s treatment, monitoring, or simply peace of mind.

How Much Does It Cost?

Blood test pricing depends on the type and complexity of the test. We’ll always discuss costs with you beforehand. Basic blood panels start from £75.00.

Pet Urine Analysis – In-House & External Testing

Urine testing is an important diagnostic tool, often used to support blood analysis.  We’re equipped to perform in-house urine analysis, whether it’s checking the concentration, detecting blood or crystals in the urine.

For more complex diagnostics, we also work closely with a trusted external veterinary laboratory where they may perform more in-depth urine analysis.

This gives us the best of both worlds: speed when it matters, and depth when it’s needed.

We will tell you if and when we require a urine sample from your pet. Urine tests start from £17.00.
