Pet X-rays (Radiography)

A pet X-ray (radiography) is a safe, non-invasive way to look inside your pet’s body. We commonly perform X-rays to investigate a wide range of conditions on dogs, cats and small animals alike.

Reasons to perform pet X-rays:

  • Suspected fractures, joint and spinal issues
  • Abdominal issues including detection of swallowed objects, or trauma
  • Chest X-rays to detect heart size, fluid or issues within the lungs
  • Imaging to detect bladder stones and to assess organ size.

Most dog and cat X-rays are performed under light sedation or General Anaesthetic to help your pet remain calm, still and pain free during the scan.

Pet Dental X-ray

Some dog, cat and rabbit dental problems aren’t visible on the surface. That’s where pet dental X-rays come in.

We use dental X-rays:

  • To detect root infections, resorptive lesions, or bone loss
  • For hidden decay, jaw problems, or retained teeth
  • During dental procedures for a comprehensive oral health picture

Dental imaging is typically carried out under general anaesthesia while your pet is already in for a dental clean or investigative dental treatment.

pet ultrasound

Pet Ultrasound

Pet ultrasound uses soundwaves to examine internal organs – without the need for surgery.

We perform:

  • Ultrasound scans for digestive issues or abdominal discomfort.
  • Ultrasound imaging to assess liver, kidney, spleen and bladder health
  • Ongoing monitoring for chronic conditions like cysts or tumours
  • Reproductive ultrasounds for pregnancy confirmation and uterine infections

Cat or dog ultrasound is a gentle, painless procedure that does not often require sedation however we may need to use light sedation for certain cases. Ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool when we need to look beyond what we can feel or see on the outside.

Why Is Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Needed?

Imaging helps us:

  • Identify internal problems quickly and safely
  • Confirm or rule out a diagnosis
  • Monitor ongoing conditions or responses to treatment
  • Plan surgery or other interventions with greater accuracy

It’s often used alongside blood and urine tests along with a thorough clinical exam for a complete health picture of your pet.

How to Prepare Your Pet for Diagnostic Imaging

Most procedures require minimal preparation. We may advise:

  • Fasting your pet for 8–12 hours beforehand (especially for abdominal imaging or if sedation is required)
  • Avoiding extreme exercise before the appointment however a short walk prior is advised to help empty your pets bowls.
  • Bringing any medication details or medical history
  • Planning for your pet to stay with us for a few hours

We’ll let you know exactly what’s needed when you book.

What to Expect During the Appointment

  • Initial assessment – Our vet will examine your pet and decide which imaging is needed.
  • Sedation if required – Some pets need light sedation for clear, still images.
  • Imaging procedure – Carried out by trained staff using gentle handling techniques.
  • Results review – We’ll interpret the images and explain what they show, usually the same day or within a week if we require to seek advanced advice or a second opinion.

You’ll always be kept informed and involved in the next steps.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of diagnostic imaging depends on the type of scan and whether sedation or further tests are needed.

  • Pet x-rays from £95.00 for the first X-ray
  • Pet ultrasound scans from £68.00
  • Pet dental x-rays start from £45.00 but these are included in the dental procedure

We’ll always provide a clear estimate before starting any procedure.
