Senior Pet Health Checks in Whitehaven

Caring for your older dogs and cats in West Cumbria.

As pets age, their health needs change. At The Vet Whitehaven, we offer dedicated senior pet checks to help keep your older dog or cat comfortable, mobile and thriving well into their golden years.

Whether it’s spotting early signs of illness or managing long-term conditions, regular health checks help us support a better quality of life for your ageing pet.

Worried about your senior pet slowing down?

What Do We Offer in a Senior Pet Health Check?

Our senior pet check-ups are tailored to the unique needs of ageing dogs and cats. Each appointment includes a full “nose-to-tail” examination, with time to discuss any concerns you’ve noticed at home. Senior pets benefit from these check-ups at least every 6–12 months. We typically assess:

Weight, body condition and muscle tone

Dental health and any signs of pain or infection

Joint health & mobility

Heart & lung function

Skin, coat, eyes and ears

Urine testing to screen for kidney or bladder issues

Support with chronic disease management

Tailored health plan to support comfort & wellbeing

Nutrition & hydration advice

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

  • Bring a fresh urine sample if possible (we can provide a collection pot in advance)
  • Jot down any behaviour changes, eating habits, or mobility concerns
  • Bring a list of any medications or supplements your pet is taking
  • Try to bring your pet in when they’re calm and not too full from a big meal

Our team will make sure your pet is relaxed and comfortable throughout.

The Importance of a Senior Pet Health Check

Many age-related conditions in pets develop gradually and may go unnoticed — but early detection can make all the difference.

Senior health checks help us catch and manage:

  • Arthritis and joint stiffness
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Diabetes or kidney issues
  • Heart problems
  • Dental disease
  • Cognitive decline

Being proactive allows us to slow progression, relieve discomfort, and improve quality of life.

What to Expect

During your pet’s senior check, you can expect:

  • A warm, gentle welcome and calm environment
  • A full clinical exam by one of our experienced vets
  • Discussion of your pet’s daily habits, appetite, behaviour and mobility
  • Any necessary diagnostics (e.g. urine testing)
  • A personalised care plan with practical home advice
  • Clear follow-up recommendations or further testing if needed

You’ll leave with peace of mind and the support of a team who understands older pets.

How Much Does It Cost?
